    Play in steering wheel.

So with the car parked, engine off - I can turn the steering wheel approx 1/16th~1/8th of a turn either direction before I "feel" the wheels in the steering and they actually move.

I had the steering rack replaced with a "slightly used" (in other words I got hosed) Z28 steering rack years ago and it's worked ok, but lately (2009?) I noticed play int he steering wheel while driving / standing still / etc.

Could there be broken gears somewhere?

Thx for any assistance in advance.

EDIT: Forgot to add that I've checked the U-Joint and it seems to be ok (had wife turn steering wheel and with every turn she did the whole system turned). I have also replaced the OUTER tie-rod ends. My bad for forgetting to include that pertinent info (there is a reason I'm asking about the rack/gearing ).

    Have replaced:

    • Outer Tie Rod (both sides)
    • Hubs (both sides)
    • Wheels Rebalanced
    • Tires replaced (it was time)

Could also be tie rod ends. If they are worn that will add slop to the system.

When mine starts having issues (or I'm doing front suspension upgrades, whichever comes first) I plan on sticking an LS1 rack in mine to eliminate that rag joint along with getting the faster ratio.

I thought the newer body style didn't have a rag joint?

The V6 cars still had them.
