Blown head gasket or not? Odd symptom

I picked up an 01 camaro 3.8 5-speed. The guy said his mechanic buddy said it was a blown head gasket. It fires up every time, but it won't go faster than 20 mph. Tranny got checked and it was fine. Any ideas what's up?

Step one check your head gaskets, if they're okay then it's not your head gaskets.

Could be a clogged cat, or 100 other things.

I understand it can be hundreds, or more like 20, other things...but is head gaskets possible with those symptoms?

Yes it's possible, for one antifreeze could kill your spark plugs if it gets into your cylinders. What happens when you try to go faster than 20mph, whats the car do?

Just doesn't go lol, shudders a bit...acts like clogged cat, or dead coil almost. I'll check the color of the coolant and oil tomorrow.

If you think it's a HG then do a compression test. That's usually the best way to tell but your problem sounds like a cat

First thing I would do is put a vacuum gauge on it and drive it. If its a clogged cat it will have 0 vacuum, and possibly positive pressure when it will not accelerate. Does it hav a check engine light on? A drive by wire problem could cause that too, if its in limp mode.

Being an 01 it's sounds more like DBW throttle failing in to limp mode
    (20mph max)
Hg prob would still let you go over 20 with gradual throttle and speed

    Same with clogged cat
It will let you increase speed with gradual no load scenario

If you suspect cat remove O2 sensors
This will bleed the pressure before the cat
Just a quickly way to test

DBW failure doesn't always throw a code when it starts to crap out

Hg issues become pretty obvious when they occur

Ok so I checked the coolant and oil and they were clean. I decided to remove the ICM and coil packs and ran up to autozone to get them tested. 2 of the 3 coils tested just before passing, ICM was fine. Ordered 3 new coils, plugs, and wires...let's see what happens. Hopefully this solves the 20mph limit issue. If not I'll have much more testing to do.
