    Problem Starting

i brought my car to the shop and had the spark plugs and fuel filter changed..since they changed both i don't know if it's a spark or fuel problem..but when i go to start my car..the starter turns like normal and it sounds like the car is about to start up..only it doesnt..it keeps on cranking for a long time..eventually it starts up..after it starts it runs and drives perfectly..the only problem is the long start..also..i always had to give the car just a tiny bit of gas to start..but now with this problem i have to put the pedal to the metal..anyone have any ideas??

i had a similar problem except mine was the fuel pump.

leave the key in the on position for a bit and then try cranking, if it fires up then maybe its something with your fuel pump or fuel delivery.

heres my post when i had the problem

thanks..i read over your post..i tried leaving the key on..i can hear the pump prime..then i pause and start it..it doesn't do any good..i haven't tried priming it more than once though..i don't know if that even makes a difference

if it is the fuel pump..whats the cost of replacing that?

i burned up 2 granatelli pumps before i went to autozone and bought a entire new fuel pump assembly... i didnt need the extra fuel anymore...

the racetronix setup would be ideal, cause it uses the extra nipple on top like stock, and you dont need to modify the bucket for it to work correctly..

yeah the reason i think it's not the IAC sensor is because if the car is running and i turn it off and then immediately start it up again it's fine..but if i let it sit for even 10 - 20 seconds i have the same problem again

is there anything i can do in the mean time to give the starter a break?

Mine did that, the fuel pressure regulator had gone bad.

how can you tell if it's the fpr or the pump?..just test the fuel pressure?..what should it read?

If your still hearing the Fuel Pump run/prime my guess is the FPR. Mine did the EXACT same thing.

I had my car in for a coil pack and the shop pointed it out to me that it had been leaking.

I think its between 50-80 psi when running but im not sure. That info is around here somewhere.

so if the fuel pressure is not within specs then the problem is the regulator..and if it is within specs it is the pump?..the car runs fine once it does eventually start..so i'm guessing the pressure is going to be within specs..so how do i tell which one it is?

If it runs fine once its started then it seems like it wouldnt be your pump? since the motor just dosent magically suck fuel or create a vaccum? The pump runs and keeps pressure in the lines.

The Fuel Pressure Regulator is suspsoed to keep pressure (within a certain range) seems like its common that they start to leak around seals and thus lose pressure.

Makes it harder for the car to prime at first. once its running the pump can easily keep pressure in the lines but the FPR letting air in or w/e its doing is keeping it from not starting.

Make sense? And im not the most technical when it comes to it but thats basically the run down on how it was explained to me.

ok..thank you..i get that..then how do i capture an out of spec fuel pressure reading to determine that the fpr is faulty..or is that just pretty much the best bet right now?

If the shop did the Fuel filter change, maybe that put it in backwards?
