im in the middle of a ls1 swap with my v6 bird and there are a lot of unknowns or so it seems like there are those that can tell me you need these parts but no why for instance.

i was told i needed the ls1 steering wrack i have since found the why but for me is irrelevant. but for you guys this may help

the reason for needing the ls1 rack is the alt is mounted low driverside on the engine compared to our high pass side, which creates shaft problems so the knuckle location on the ls1 is different, now the exception (i think so far)

if you have a y87 car part of the package is an upgraded steering along wiht 4 disc brakes, dual exhuast 3.42 gearing and hit or miss some get the limited slip i did not. anyway upon quick visual comparison (ihave not installed this on my new k member yet) it seems the y87 steering wrack and the ls1 wrack are the same which means the upgraded steering is just ls1 parts which makes perfect sense. which makes me wonder what other parts are this way from the y87 car upgraded for disc brakes (ls1 brakes????) these questions i cant answer until finished with the 414 swap in which case i may find that the brakes on my car may not suit my needs reguardless but none the less could be beneficial to someone just doing a basic ls1 swap.

our 4l60e and the ls1.

this one most already know bell housing is different what most done know is that the input shafts are different therefore unswappable.

harness and electrical issues
you can just use any ls1 harness in the v6 system but it will still create small issues such as on one side of the engine will fire as (if he is still a member) fad2blk mentioned along time ago when i read up on his therefore you need to make a jumper wire for the ignition system.

info i found valuable and thought i would share
and it may help someone else out as well

The input shaft problem can be fixed by swapping the input drum, which you can do if you can pull off the bell housing. Sub 97 4l60s are a one piece though, so thats not really an option for older transmissions...

where did you find that out cause that could really help me sell mine

you sure about that info??

"That is not true. It is a one piece shaft. The input shaft is pressed into the input drum. To remove the input drum assembly the pump must be removed... partial teardown.

And then there is a bit more to it than that... the pump will need to be replaced as well. It can be converted but most of the time it isn't worth the effort."

Yep, I'm here from time to time. I was just pointed to this site recently though. That wire mod was a PITA to figure out! LOL Good luck with your swap.

thanks fad2blk, i was wondering if you would chime in or not
yeah i skipped a few stages with the whole swap thing instead of just getting an ls1 getting it to work then modding it, i had a 414 built got all new suspension and a manual trans 9 inch rear and a custom fuel system and wiring harness, im hoping the harness will take away much of my pain when it comes to getting her up and running pics are on my cardomain of some of the swap i need to update the motor is under the car but not all the way in, i still need to figure out a clutch before i can really move any further

Yeah I tried to come back on Firebirdv6 and talk to some friends, but was directed here by another friend, and most of the people I use to talk too are here now. So I'll try and come on here as much as I can to check out the rides, and help out where I can if possible.

Yeah I'd say you skipped a few steps! lol I'll check out your cardomain page..oh and I went with a spec stg 3 clutch and love it.

when did you get it cause i have read now that a lot of people are havning problems with the 3 i was looking at the stage 3+ until i had heard that then started looking into twin disc setups for the streetabality of it.

apparently the puck style clutchs keep burning out around 8000 miles do a search on ls1tech for it there is a numerous amount of threads about it

I tend to take tech lightly on certain things. That forum is made up of tons and tons and tons of people. So even if there are 3-5 or a little more threads out there about an aftermarket part not being right, there are still tons that have had no problems. Like me. I don't have 8k on it, but probably 4 and haven't had a single issue with it. It's definitely a good source of info, but not always accurate info when you take into account the amount of members there are on there. Don't get me wrong, I am on there a lot and read a lot, and have asked a bunch of questions. Opinions never hurt when reading up on stuff, just don't always take them to heart :)

my builder was the one that told me about it first he had one crap out on a 427 camaro they had built it started slipping on them while they were tuning it.then i started going through the site looking and stumbled on a thread that stated something about when they took production outside their company they started having the problems with pressure plate thickness causing premature burnout of the flywheel and clutch.

then there was another thread where one guy was trying to say it was driver error and because they were driving a race clutch in a street car this was causing premature burnout due to poor clutch selection puck style clutches are ment to be dumped not slipped form optimum grab, which is why the spec 3+ is a disc style and is ment to be more driver friendly

Hmmmm, a lot of good info. All I can say is I haven't had any trouble with mine and I do both with it ... street drive and race :)

I have the Y87 package and had no issues with steering when i did my swap.. I also didn't have to do any brake upgrades.. I had 3.42's but swapped to 3.73's and i'd definitely advise anyone else to do the same.
