It has taken me a year to get to this point with a lot of hard work, endless
research and reading, This may be far from being a pro job but I don’t think its too shabby considering 4 years ago when I bought my first grand prix I could not even change the brakes.
I welcome and would like comments/help/constructive criticism etc so let me know!!!

I could do it all day long on w-bodies I duno about a Eldo, that could be a sweet ride rwd

I'm curious, what did you get that axle out of
Axle: Not sure on the year but it is out of a mustang it is exactly the same as a 8.8 out of a sn95 ( I think but any ford 8.8 will work but they widened them three inches in....98.)

Differential: Same one out of a cobra/explorer, brings the spline count up to 31

Axle's: Moser

Brakes: Calipers/Brackets off of any sn95 gt stang, cobras will work also.

Gears: Your choice, people like Ford racing gear sets.

Girdle: Again Ford racing but there are about 10000 manufacturers.

The heavy cobra guys with solid swaps run setups like these (IRS to live axle swap) into the tens with slicks and they hold. There are people running the same axle in camaros and still retainig the torque arm/panhard bar.

Small update:

What I did monday / today:

The more I look at things the better a custom tubular k member might be in order.

what made you stick with the 3800 block? have you thought about using an aussie upper intake as well?

lo_jack
05-16-2007, 10:53 AM
That is actually quite brilliant to go with ford rear driveline parts - there has to be a ton of it lying around or aftermarket, and it is not something that people would think about, but that has to have helped your cost.

I noticed there is sort of a tunnel already in the body pan - convenient. How is your pinion angle looking?

eaton_rice
05-16-2007, 03:04 PM
what made you stick with the 3800 block? have you thought about using an aussie upper intake as well?

I have always been a fan of turbo 6cyl cars, supras, gn's, cyclones etc.. and I already had a disassembled l67 so I went for it. As for the aussie intake, I like it but I already have a polished camaro intake and a guy with a rwd gtx gp runs 9's with one so I figured it would work ok for me.

I noticed there is sort of a tunnel already in the body pan - convenient. How is your pinion angle looking?

When I started the project I was hoping it would work out, but as with everything else on this project it's gona have to be custom. The D.S will need another 3-5" of head room above the tunnel roof :dammit: so chop chop.

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/4/web/2368000-2368999/2368085_101_full.jpg

^^^^^^^^^Thats not even the half of it, I have to re-build all the crossmembers and cut out ALL of the tunnel

The rear lower control arms have adjustable spring seats so I can drag the thing if I want and when it is nice and low the pinion will be almost planar with the slip yoke of the trans. Also I have not established an angle on the motor/trans yet, actually what angle does the camaro motor sit at????? that’s something that I would like to know. But my upper control arms are double adjustable so I can choose any pinion angle I like.

Moving a little slow because of the holiday and graduation parties. I had to figure out what to do about mounting the motor, I was planning on using the existing sub frame however the thing is ridiculously heavy and there would just be absolutely no way to mount a rack. I wanted to do a DIY tubular k member... , but I wasn't feeling that crazy :screwy: so I got a camaro k member, had to do an ebay special because no yards within a $40 worth-o-gas radius had any. I am installing the member in such a way that it preserves it's original mounting points so I will be able to install an aftermarket tubular k some time down the road.

It dosnt look centered because the fwd frame rails are far from paralel because they have to fit the giant 4t65e trans. Please excuse my sloppy looking centering devices (string) however I assure you the thing is within a 32nd of an inch of where it needs to be, took 3.5hrs last night measuring, checking, re-measuring etc.:dammit: The best part is after removing the 10lbs of steel bracketry for the sub frame mounting points I now have a place to run an exhaust!!!!

If you are going to box it in yo might want to either weld the nut in or capture it in some way so you don't have to take the plate off if you ever need or want to change out the K. I'm more about it being functional than looking good so I'd probably just leave it as is.

if thats not a typo, a stock 79 axle is a 7.5 inch, just as week as a camaro's

85 and up mustangs have/had the 8.8.

Id double check that.

v8 cougars, and thunderbirds from the 80's also had the 8.8

Ya, not sure what year mustang it is from exactly. When I said 79 I probably was thinking that this housing can fit the 79-04 stangs (98-04 needs 1.5" spacers).

I do know its an 8.8 because in it I have:
FRPP girdle for an 8.8
New FRPP 3.73 gears for an 8.8
New seals and bearings for an 8.8

Thanks for bringing it to my attention Ill fix that:secret: .

Na, gona go single, got a PT67 on order (for starters) and a custom cam
218/218 .528/.528 (its the dual pattern stattama stage 3 cam)

The GN motor is a great platform, however before I decided to do this project I purchased Intense stage two heads and a 3800 short block, so I had e'm liked e'm and decided to use e'm

Update:

Hydroboost install:

After the motor was installed it was apparent that there was no room for any sort of vaccum assist brake booster. I needed to keep power brakes so I switched to a hydro-boost from you guessed it, a 99 ford mustang. besides this systems compact package it has the ability to provide higher fluid pressure to the brakes that translate into better stopping power.

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/4/web/2368000-2368999/2368085_131_full.jpg

Here is the booster and you can see the flange welded onto the left side (also right side to come) so the booster can be bolted into the stock location to retain as much strength as possible. Also the stock linkage was too short so that was cut off and a piece of the original was welded on.

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/4/web/2368000-2368999/2368085_132_full.jpg

Here is the booster in place, everything slid in nice and easy with only minor trimming.

Absolutely impressive!! I wish that some aftermarket producer would make a hydrobooster bolt-on for the 4th gen f-body. Im going to have to hide a vac can some where in front of my radiator to compensate for my cam and turbo. I also had to install my radiator surge tank there as well. I envy the abundant space you have to do all of this.

Axle: Not sure on the year but it is out of a mustang it is exactly the same as a 8.8 out of a sn95 ( I think but any ford 8.8 will work but they widened them three inches in....98.)

Just as a small correction in case anyone else was looking into doing this themselves, the '99 Mustangs were the first to get the widened housing and axles... the same year they went to the "New Edge" bodystyle.

Also, it is important to note that while the housings are virtually the same for Foxbody through '98 8.8 differentials, the 94-98's have the 5-lug axles, but the Foxbody axles are 4-lug (and shorter). However, the axles are interchangeable, so if you can get a Foxbody 8.8 housing, the SN95 (94-98) axles will swap in.

Differential: Same one out of a cobra/explorer, brings the spline count up to 31

Yeah, the other good news is that ALL the 8.8 differentials, gears, etc are interchangeable, no matter which housing/axle setup it is, although the spline number obviously must match between differential and axles.

Brakes: Calipers/Brackets off of any sn95 gt stang, cobras will work also.

Thus, how I'm installing Cobra 13"/11.65" brakes on my '93 Foxbody Notchback.

That is actually quite brilliant to go with ford rear driveline parts - there has to be a ton of it lying around or aftermarket, and it is not something that people would think about, but that has to have helped your cost.

Yes, Ford driveline parts are ridiculously abundant and cheap... especially if you're not looking for the wider 99+ stuff. Because my Foxbody is a 4-cylinder (for now...), I needed an 8.8 for the future build. So, I picked up a 8.8 housing with the differential and gears included from a Lincoln Mark VII for $75... and I picked up some 94-98 axles for FREE. Oh, and the Mark VII's had t-loc (posi) and 3.55 gears, stock, so I got an 8.8 rear w/ t-loc, 3.55's, and 94-98 axles for a grand total of $75. That's cheap :D

Update:

Hydroboost install:

After the motor was installed it was apparent that there was no room for any sort of vaccum assist brake booster. I needed to keep power brakes so I switched to a hydro-boost from you guessed it, a 99 ford mustang.

Just as another minor clarification, the V6 Mustangs never got the hydroboost, so you'll want to look for something from a V8 car.

Anyway, awesome work, and good luck.

Been busy with having fun but here is an update

Got my cam installed 218/218 .512/.512 114 lsa I chose the stattama stage3 turbo cam and went split pattern because I was told those cams are for cars with full exhaust and turbos with small ex ARs. Did the install with the motor in the car, easiest grand prix cam install in history.

Nice cars with nice numbers however I am not such a fan of the body style, I guess Im a sucker for the 90's cars

Things are going slow, lots of little things to do, not much pic worthy but here are a few of the bigger things:

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/4/web/2368000-2368999/2368085_160_full.jpg

Moved the main wiring harness up and over to make room for the exhaust hard to see but its not welded in yet, patched up a hole in the fire wall and started
the dog house. I konw the color is off I dont know how that happoned, I oredered some new paint and well try again.

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/4/web/2368000-2368999/2368085_162_full.jpg

I was having to drop the K-member to remove the motor/trans and I did not like that so I adjused the air box. A little notch where the evaporator used to be (no ac).

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/4/web/2368000-2368999/2368085_159_full.jpg

Making some high flow fuel rails to work as a parallel system. These are stock l32 fuel rails, the original system is returnless so I removed the supply line and caps at each end and will be having someone weld some -6 stainless AN fittings on the end. To put the size into perspective the OD is 0.752" stainless where as a stock L67 rail has a OD of 0.5" and is not stainless, thats a full .252" larger, nice.

I also set up an F-Quick account for higher rez images fquick.com/rwdgp

It includes step by step procedures and pictures as I follow ATSG, when it is complete I'll toss a thread into the trans section

Here is a list of upgraded parts that Ill be adding, feel free to chime in with opinions I would like some constructive critisizm:

Billit intermediate servo
Billit overdrive servo
13 vane pump
29 element doubble cage input sprag
Red eagle 2-4 wide band with new oem band drum
Z-Pack 3-4 clutch pac
Rebuild kit w/ gaskets etc
Steel pistons (forward etc)
Beast reaction shell
Probably a different accumulator valve train assembly
Wide sun gear bushing
Wide stator support bushing
Possiable oversized boost valve
1-2 pinless accumulator piston
2-3 pinless accumulator piston
High rpm pump slide output spring

Unknown tq converter
Also there is a company saying they are going to release a planitary gear set with:
2.66:1 1st, 1.55:1 2nd, 1:1 3rd, .64:1 4th
Great ratios, I dont know how strong they will be though

Actually I started this 3 summers ago :shiner:(only work when its warm out)

Finished all the welding and painting prep work for the fire wall and trans tunnle, also I decided to tweak the k-member mounts a bit. Going slow because I am splitting the trans / car work also lots of little things to tie up like cleanning up all the spot welds where things were removed, cleaning up nicks where the grinder went where it wasn't suposed to cleaning up some light rust spots etc. re-checked the chassis and k for squareness, everyting is within 1/16 of an inch at its absolute worst(rear left to front right diagonal mesurement):drivin:

Got the rear portion of the drive shaft tunnle done, it does angle up however there is no reason behind that, i just though it would look nicer.

I hate the step look however it makes sure there is no horizontal surfaces under the car to hold watter and rust.

http://anti-rice.com/images/vw.jpg

Just kidding

The only appearance mods it will have is
lowered,
svt wheels,
tasteful led tails (pictured below when I test fitted them on my white gp)
a shaker hood if and only if I need the clearance
Side exhaust if its too much work to send it out the rear

The roll cage is purely for functionality only it will have a full interior panels headliner and carpet heat but no ac and hopefully the back seat will be accessible but im not holding my breath also stock bumpers and spoiler and hood if I can help it.

I also plan on driving it most days in the spring summer and fall

I dont plan on it being a trailer queen for the track or anything like that.

LED tails when off almost stock looking

a little extra thread but thats ok they fit

The shocks came with this rubber sleeve that snugs the shock into the housing and makes it weather tight, might not be the intended application but it works here
http://memimage.cardomain.com/member_images/4/web/2368000-2368999/2368085_180_full.jpg

Choped out the bottom of the housing (and trimed the top) to drop the strut down to give some extra travel because the car will be lowered 2+ inches, the silver sleeve comes with the shocks and works well to center the shock in the housing.

Roll bar install:
For anyone with a W body the below is applicable to you, if you want a cage the part number from jegs will provide you with a pre bent hoop notched tubing and mounting plates. The fit of the hoop is great you only have to cut the bracing tubing to length and of course a welder.

Instead of spending a few hrs with a tube bender and driving 2 hrs to the closest speed shop for steel I decided to try a jegster cage:
P/N550-944703K Monte Carlo 1995-02
The cage came with a pre bent hoop, base plates and tubing with notches cut on one end so the rest has to be trimmed.

Anyway, anyone have any interior tips, mainly carpeting, its not my strong area, also I decided not to use the OEM seats (dont fit well) so I am looking for some ones that will work with a five point but not ricey, some nice side bolstering would be nice too, also looking for fairly cheep because I just need to get this thing done, I can replace them down the road.

Trying to figure out what to do with the rear, I might toss in the OEM seat cushions from the front seats or simply carpet the whole thing.

http://memimage.cardomain.com/member_images/4/web/2368000-2368999/2368085_201_full.jpg

Trying to fit the OEM carpeting in the front also got my B&M rachet hammer shifter in the thing shifts awesome and it feels like a rock mounted directly to the frame rail, I fabricated the mount to tie together the two halves of the frame rail together.

Party sounds good, BYOB,

Installing the center console, had to cut it down 2" in the rear and all but one inch or so in the front and re-create mount points on the tunnel, major pain took four hours to re-shape the console and center insert.
http://memimage.cardomain.com/member_images/4/web/2368000-2368999/2368085_202_full.jpg

The stock seats were too wide, the actual foam/cloth would fit however all the slides and mechanics were too wide on the tunnel side. The new seats provide 5pt harness (required by nhra at quarter times I am looking for) and they only way 44lbs so a small weight savings. Not happy about having to get the new seats but it was a necessary evil, they hold you in great though. Another perk is the mount height is a LOT lower, that has always been a pet peve of mine. You are sitting (IIRC) almost a foot off of the floor board, I am 6'3" so lower is better, I sat in it tonight and it is much lower and the side bolstering holds you right in, feels much more like you are in the car rather than riding over it.

but i like the body style of the GTP, which is why i have one, and not a GTO. plus GTOs are rwd, so seeing one doing a RWD burnout, or lifting the front tires at the track would be, um, yea, boring. but if its in a GTP, everyone would be all like WTF?!?!?!?!

Yes that is an ls1 k member, ls1 rack, ls1 intermediate shaft, stock grand prix u-joint on the end of the steering column and two grand pix doubble D shafts welded back to back to get the proper length. so i was wondering about the knuckles on your setup. Since you went from rear steer to front steer did you just install the knuckles on opposite sides to have the tie rod end bores in the proper location or did you borrow knuckles from another vehicle that already had the tie rod bores in the front?

eaton_rice
08-26-2008, 10:23 AM
You are 100% correct, I simply flipped the stock knuckles to get the bores in the front. The problem I have now is the bore is conical with the wide part starting at the top (top mount) and the camaro rack comes in from the bottom so I need the wide part starting at the bottom. Anyone have any ideas?

FlyinGTP
08-27-2008, 07:13 AM
Your using the aluminum knuckles right? If so i have a simple solution but will require some machining. Just tig weld them up and then have a shop taper them how you need it.

I found a 3 fluit countersink with the correct angle, ill give that a shot, either that or ill just drill it out and use a heim joint, it would also save me from having to shorten the tie rod ends also.

I had to toss some wheels on to pull it out of the garage to fix the door return spring so I decided to take a pic. The day I took this it looked like rain so instead of letting it rain on my ride and cause all the steel grinding dust to rust and ruin the paint I decided to wash it, however with all the over spray and dust and grime I had to clay the entire car a simple wash wasn't pulling it off.

Also when I put the car back up on stands I could tell that it was much more ridged

Thanks again guys for the complements

As for the GN 3.8 vs the L67, had the heads, had the motor, had the HP tuners also because it's the OEM motor in the car I can use the stock (almost) harness and PCM so in CT ill be able to pass emissions:secret: and register it.

Been a week or so since iv been under the car, starting my senior project in school working with cl&p jot a promo at work to EE and completely loaded down with work so time is scarce. Also been waiting on that one last flex line for 2 weeks. Also had to do some dumb things like hit up the junk yard last saturday to get worthless things like bake/gas peddle linkage clips

Pics:
Had to modify everything on the car, even the flexible brake line retaining clips.
http://memimage.cardomain.com/member_images/4/web/2368000-2368999/2368085_223_full.jpg?044420-261

The rear soft lines were too short to run direct to the frame with the width of the tires I was looking for so I had to run a singular center line, not my favorite idea and makes a mess of lines but:

Driver, good idea, glass will probably be the only way to go

Haven't been doing much, just kind of poking at it with a stick. $$ is tight, no one bought my heads and the trans died on my white gp (again) and it's cold! So here is what I did get done:

I hated the original motor mount idea I had going and it created a lot of problmes so I moved them back about 4 inches each.. It was a pain because on the drivers side I had to worry about the knock sensor, starter, rack, intermediate shaft and ps lines but I like the new design 10x better

The pic is a little hard to see because so much is going on. Looking from the end of the brake master cylinder
http://memimage.cardomain.com/member_images/4/web/2368000-2368999/2368085_225_full.jpg?055012-304

Also now they are tubular instead of the ugly tube steel (pass side) Excuse the appearance they are only tacked in until I pull the motor to finish up the welds
http://memimage.cardomain.com/member_images/4/web/2368000-2368999/2368085_226_full.jpg?055012-304

So that's it, motor and trans coming out once again, going in the basement. Maybe this year ill actually get around to building the serpentine and turbo setup inside. Still need a converter, waist gate, thinking of new heads and a few other nic nacs.

Finished the mounts 100x happier than last years version:
http://memimage.cardomain.com/member_images/4/web/2368000-2368999/2368085_231_full.jpg?291910-308

Started to mock up the intercooler and rad, should be a simple install. I went with this setup to minimize the volume of cold side piping. Ignore the 2x2 square steel, thats just for spacing. Was going to go v-mount but the rad is huge and I dont think a crazy v mount hood would look good on the car
http://memimage.cardomain.com/member_images/4/web/2368000-2368999/2368085_228_full.jpg?401110-308

There is about 9" from the front of the serp belt to the rad and subtract another 4 for the fans that only leaves 5 inches for the turbo so well see what happens there.

Back from the dead, got started on it again this past week only got a fiew hrs into it but here it is:

progress(only a few hrs in):

My cousin got his shop almost up and running, so I media blasted the UIM and LIM, the difference is amazing it looks new
http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/2/4473/1701/23680850232_large.jpg

Got my last turbo part, I actually started laughing when I opened the waist gate, I had forgotten they are larger in real life
http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/2/4473/1701/23680850233_large.jpg

Got my remaining header parts, I figured I would polish them up during my lunch breaks
http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/2/4473/1701/23680850237_large.jpg

When I had installed the rear, all 3 years ago I had different plans for the car so I went with the cheep stock springs and crappy kyb shocks
http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/2/4473/1701/23680850236_large.jpg

Then I maid the custom coilovers for the front using stiffer springs and and single adjustable konis and wanted the rears to match so I needed a short shock with at least a 3" travel twin tube rebound adjustable coilover or coilover adaptable with eyelit or heim ends, the ones I found were the strange 10 way adjustable aluminum coilover shocks, real nice looking units
http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/2/4473/1701/23680850239_large.jpg

Made some more mounts:
http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/2/4473/1701/23680850241_large.jpg

First try was mounting them on the frame rail and making an extention to the axle however as shown below they hang down waaaayyy to far, the bottom is actually even with the lowe bead of the rim so if I ever got a flat the lower mount could hit the road, not good
http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/2/4473/1701/23680850242_large.jpg

So the next step was to mount them inside the frame rail but I needed some mounting points so I made a new cross member
http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/2/4473/1701/23680850235_large.jpg

Installed it between the rear cage struts
http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/2/4473/1701/23680850234_large.jpg

And installed the coilovers, looks much better and waaay more ground clearance (will revamp the lower mount just tacked in for now)
http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/2/4473/1701/23680850240_large.jpg

I did a test with the first coilover mount setup and the 225 lb springs were very harsh, so now that they are mounted at an angle they should feel a bit softer

Got front and rear sway bar and poly mounts and end links etc, those are the next to go in, rebuild the rear leaky caliper new heads and converter and the motor is going in for the LAST time, hopefully in about 4 weeks

http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/2/4473/1701/23680850244_large.jpg

Its kinda need driving behind the car you can see all the goodies
http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/2/4473/1701/23680850246_large.jpg

Took a long time......again to set the ride height always tedious but it came out good, here it is slammed still with some good strut travel however I put everything in to be able to lift it up a couple inches
http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/2/4473/1701/23680850245_large.jpg

I got a bit OCD and decided to weld a safty strap over the top of the crossmember because that will be holding the weight of the car so now there is major amounts of steel holding this thing together
http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/2/4473/1701/23680850243_large.jpg

Next thing on the agenda is to weld in some secondary small mounting points for the transmission crossmember and re drill one seat hole that was slightly off

Thanks guys, more updates:

Found some stuff I didnt like about the oil pan so I had to make a engine holding fixture drop the k member pull the pan, modify that and some other stuff so that took a week or so.

Finished that and mounted the intercooler and rad:

Trying to find the best location for the turbo:

Starting on the headers (sorry blurry) I am getting to hate the plug location, there could be so many more options if not for the plugs and wires:

Very nice work! Any idea when she'll be ready? Thanks man you have a nice looking machine as well. As for running, I am aming to drive the thing to my company picnic sept 4th so well see. It always looks like 2 weeks then something always comes up:dammit:

Small update: still waiting on post turbo hot piping, t-bolt clamps, cold side piping and silicone couplers but:

Finished the fuel rails -10 wayyyyyy overkill but it looks cool, L32 rails modified with -10 an stainless fittings, the rails are so big I could have gone larger. Still need to pressure test them though
http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/2/4473/1701/23680850284_large.jpg

Borrowed a sewing machine, got some leather made a shift boot, got all the linkage sorted out and leather wrapped the center console, looks a lot better but still not happy with it. (Last years b-day present in the background)
http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/2/4473/1701/23680850283_large.jpg

I am going to have:
Boost
Oil Pressure
Wideband AFR
Trans pressure
Trans temp
EGT
Voltage
Fuel pressure
And possibly tach (man valve body trans)
So I needed some extra room, I wanted to keep a close eye on trans pressure so I wanted to bring the gauge up on the dash, not installed yet just wanted to get your guys opinions on it. Just some left over ss exhaust tubing will paint it black.

What i love about this project is how well it was documented and that all the work was done by the owner. a lot of people pay shops to do this kind of stuff. Its nice to see someone whip out a welder and start fabbing.
