I'd bet it's the lock cylinder...They do that when the electronic system in your key and cylinder go bad, flash the security light. Mine did, I eneded up bypassing the switch, with a resistor of the same value as the chip on my key. Then it always thinks your key is in, and will let you start it. Let me know if you need help with it, and the particularls of how. Good luck Ceaton!

Sounds like you're a victim of the wonderful VATS (Vehicle Anti-Theft System) or like Matt said it could be your lock cylinder.
The VATS is a pain in the ass and another stupid GM design. If it is the VATS the little chip in your key is probably not making the correct contact with the reciever inside the key hole. Here are a couple different options:
-Try cleaning the key off with rubbing alcohol
-The easiest way is it just disable it. If you have HPTuners just go to: Edit->System->General, set VATS Control to "none"

Actually, Ross, the method I was mentioning is the way to disable the VATS. But when the cylinder goes out, VATS keeps you from starting, it's all working together.
I haven't ever tried killing it with HPtuners, because mine was already bypassed. Might try that first Ceaton!

thats a no go. i can only change it from serial or pwm. the none selection is not accesible.
Damn dude, last time I had that happen to the grand am I had to take it to a friend who has one of them dealership computers and somehow he bypassed it, cost me like 25 bones but didn't have another problem like that. Easy fix, didn't even take nothin' out of the car just tapped in the computer system. Im afraid you might have to do the same.
I was thinking have you tried pulling the pcm fuse and disconnecting the battery for awhile? Just might work and doesn't hurt to try.

I guess its an effective security system then... even if you have the original set of keys you can't steal it. :jest:

Are you able to turn the key forward? Its weird it wont start, are any of your gauges acting funy? If the Vats is messed up your car wont start period. The 2nd set of Keys after a wait period should have done it. You could also have a bad ignition switch, which is a very common problem as these cars get older.

all the guages are fine.
i think it is the ignition switch as well. but ive had so many problems as of recent i may not have it too much longer.

If the switch comes loose via going bad, it'll prevent the car from starting, it can also cause the car to die with out warning. The new switch from a dealer is like 20$, but the steering colum has to come out to change it. With Vats, if you waited and used the other key, it should have started up. Hell after a little while it should ahve started with your initial key. My car is a 93 and most my LT1 buddies have gone through the ordeals of VATs, ignition switchs and what not, just happens with age.

cheap?
You must have a defective hptuners. Mine had the "no error" reported option on all 4 vats options. 2 of them were already "no error" reported so I just set the other 2 to the same thing. But I don't know if that did anything. I only have the vats problem when I wash the car(once a year) and when it's below freezing and I leave the car outside.
