Ok I am thinking of doing a swap, my Mom got a 91 Firebird real cheap, but the engine is junk. I can't seem to find a 3.1 cheaper than a 3.4 or a 3.8.
I'm being told that the 99+ cars used throttle by wire, so that seems to be out, although the person I was talking to about buying a 99 3.8 said his was throttle by cable.
What all do I need to change to run a 95 3.4 then? Unless someone on here has a 3.1 in good running order real cheap, it just doesn't seem to make much sense to spend 900+ on a high mileage 3.1 when I can have less mileage and more power for less.
The person selling the 3.8 and the 3.4 is including everything with the engines, ECU/harness and accessories.

the 99 never came with a throttle cable. The 98 did though..but it looks the same as the 96 and 97 motors.
I would think an older 3.4(maybe a 93 or 94?) would be easier because they're a little bit closer to the 3rd gen cars. atleast the 3.1 is a 60* like the 3.4, so transmission shouldn't be a problem.
a 3.4 will bolt right into where the 3.1 is, and will even take the 3.1s intake and distributer(I must say tho the 3.1s tpi intake is horribly restictive on a 3.4 and the dizzy isn't as effecent as the coil packs) you can use the 3.4 intake and coil packs with the stock computer with some slight rewiring
a 96+ 3800 will bolt in as long as you have its motor mounts too, but you need to swap its wiring harness and cpu and transmission

So if I use the 3.4, I shouldn't have a issue with the trans? The 3.4 would be coming with the ecu/harness, so I'm sure I would just use the coil packs, which I am going to ask the guy if those are included also.
The trans for the 96+ were they all just 4l60e's?? If I could find one cheap I might swap the trans also.

Indeed they were.

Ok, well it seems to get the 3.1 out I have to pull the trans out at the same time. At least thats what the Haynes says. So if I can get a 3.8 plus the trans behind it the swap should be fairly straight forward?? About the motor mounts are the mounts themselves different, or do I need to relocate them??

mounts themselves are different. The 3.1 is a 60* motor while the 3.8 ia a 90*

mounts are different but will bolt in without relocating the rubber crossmember mounts

So if I had already pulled the heads off the motor, can I still hook the hoist up to pull it out somehow? Or will I have to put the heads back on? I see the eyelet hook deal on the back of the passenger side head, but I don't see where I was supposed to hook it to the driver side??
I suppose sticking the heads back on isn't a big deal, but wondering as I already have them off, and I don't know where I was supposed to originally hook it to the driver side?
I want to try to pull the engine and trans tommarow.

yeah..normally the engine lift points are on the heads. If you've already taken the off, you next best bet IMO would be to just put some bolts with back washers on the block and lift it that way.

reuse your old head bolts and lift chain in 2 locations. with out the heads.
put a washer on the head bolt so the chain wont bind on the bolt head itself.
thread the bolt all the way into the block

Thanks.
I did locate a 98 3.8 with ecu/harness/trans/accessories. Probably what I am going to use.

Ouch.
Fitting an OBD2 engine/tranny setup into a 91 model...
You don't know how difficult that will be, do you?
If you have a budget, stick with the 3.4L.
