After two weeks of reading this, I thought there would be feedback by now. And by more I mean any.

So let me be the first to ask a few questions.

Question: Why do you guys get various different people as on wing? For instance, your guy is a LAMPS pilot, no? I take it some other people get paired with pilots that fly other stuff? What's the reasoning behind that?

Question: Why are the civvies allowed to douche you guys around. I would think they should be doing whatever you guys want, since they are there to enable you to not have to do everything yourself and concentrate on what you are supposed to be doing. That's messed up. The helmet saga is neverending.

Question: Do you get much time to investigate turbines and fueling systems when you are doing your equipment and systems learning?

And finally, you mention going to the gym but is there any structured regimine you guys are on?

The lost UH-1s story is funny as hell...

flying your primary aircraft, such as the SH-60, is an "A" billet. Being an instructor pilot, recruiter, or many other stateside jobs is considered a "B" billet. My on wing just finished 3 years with a deployable squadron. He probably deployed to the gulf area 3 or 4 times. Now he is attached to this training squadron for 3 years. It's basically a 9 to 5 job so he can have a family and raise a child. After his 3 years here he will go back to a deployable squadron for 3 more years. The cycle continues.

There are many different aircraft in the fleet, so they take pilots from every airframe and send them back here. No jet pilots though. Jet pilots always stay in the jet community. For thier "B" billet, they only become Jet instructors.

Question: Why are the civvies allowed to douche you guys around. I would think they should be doing whatever you guys want, since they are there to enable you to not have to do everything yourself and concentrate on what you are supposed to be doing. That's messed up. The helmet saga is neverending.

In a deployable squadron, enlisted Marines or sailors will be doing the jobs that the civvies do. They will be doing it alot better too. THe navy hires civvies because it's cheaper to have a permanently placed civ doing the job than it is to cross train an Marine/Sailor for this job, and then have them stay for 3 years. The civs get complacent, since alot of them have been doing the same job for 15+ years. They have developed a "system" that works for Them. The airplane mechanics are also civs. The aren't assholes though. Again, it's cheaper to have civs do it than it is to train a Marine to repair a whole new aircraft. These birds don't deploy, so it'd be a waste of money to have Enlisted folks repair them.

Question: Do you get much time to investigate turbines and fueling systems when you are doing your equipment and systems learning?

Yes. I had to know that system in depth for systems class week 1. I have to draw the entire fuel system from memory in the brief before my 4th flight.

And finally, you mention going to the gym but is there any structured regimine you guys are on?

Nope. We are expected to maintain fitness standards on our own time. The wing is generally like this when it comes to fitness. Flight school has a long standing problem. SInce there is no PT, alot of guys are in pretty poor physical fitness when they get winged and head out to the fleet. I like to lift weights, but I'm cutting back to just pullups and running while I'm in flight school. I don't have time to do lifting workouts.

The lost UH-1s story is funny as hell...

Hey, I'm glad you're entertained. I figured no one would read this after the first couple days. I'm gonna try and do these little logs everyday from here on out. If I have enough good stories in 15 years, I'm thinking I'm gonna write a book. There is a whole section at Barnes & Nobles dedicated to military biography books. No one ever wrote one about flight school though.

I've been reading them Geoff, they're entertaining. When are you going to go play volleyball with your peers?

I just read your latest update and I was wondering, what are you going to be flying exactly?

Beechcraft T34C
http://fullthrottlev6.com/upload/files/20/t34.bmp

It's got a turboprop engine
550shaft Horsepower
1,315 Ft-lbs torque
Redline is 37,000rpm on the compressor side, 33,000rpm on the power side.

It'll cruise at about 210knots (243mph) on a cold day. Max speed is 280knots (324mph).

yea I looked it up a couple days ago.
pretty neat

will you do the actual flying (take off, cruising, landing, tower calls, etc?) or will you pretty much be shown around and then quized on the entire process like an intern surgeon? LOL

That's what I would want to fly if I could fly something they still use. It's like a very early LeMans car. You and the machine and damn little else. That will be freaking sweet Geoff.

The 1/30 log was awesome. Thanks for including so much detail. I had to bite my tongue on the parachute part.

I have a very clear picture now of why you like racing, and conversely flying.

seriously almost doubled over on the parachute section.

definitely interesting reading... consider me a subscriber ;)

i can definitely understand the passion for flying..

i've been interested in the military, flying and aircraft for most of my life... i even looked into signing up for the air force reserve out of high school.. but i was a bit overweight at the time.. and i'm even more overweight now....

now that i'm nearly 25, time is slipping by.. i keep telling myself i'll get in shape eventially, but it's just not happening, and i fear my time is running out...

any idea on the age requirements for that type of thing? i guess i still hold a little hope that someday i'll get my ass into shape and still pursue that career path.

Anyway.. i definitely enjoy reading your log, i guess partly because it gives me a chance to experience what flight training is like through your eyes.. since i may never have the chance to do it myself

29 years old is the max for the Navy/Marine Corps. The Air Force might be different. We have pretty strict weight standards. Every service is different though. I don't think I've ever seen a fat Air force pilot though. They must be strict. There are plenty of fat navy pilots.

i believe the max for air force, for my height of 6'2", is around 215...

I have been so slammed lately. I will catch up this weekend. I PROMISE. I have soo much good stuff to tell. Checkride, solos, Aerobatics!!!!!!! I have made up my mind that I want to be an airshow stunt pilot when i retire. I will elaborate this weekend.

Wow, you are doing what I used to do in Red Baron on my 486 - but in real life in real hardware. Awesome. I actually know what an Immelman is in my head - looks like I learned something playing video games after all.

You are hardcore now my friend.

I went back and reread the acrobatics stuff again.

Can you explain the part about inverting again? You are not supposed to lose altitude ( or gain it I guess ) when you roll the wings 360* over. I get that; I was terrible at those in simulators because I would always fight the wings lift and end up trying to keep from flying towards the ground upside down.

You guys do what to counter that? Pop the nose up just momentarily before you roll over and hit the rudder?

And always banking right - I read they did that with Sopwiths back in ye old days of aviation because they were crazy torquey (for the time) and you could pull around on anything with one out of a right bank/dive.

Fascinating.

If you pop the nose up for just a second, you won't lose any alt when you roll. On the low speed rolls, like at the top of an immelman, you need to push the stick forward to keep the nose from falling toward the ground.

Props always spin clockwise. Always have, always will. Our aircraft has 1315ft-lbs of torque, so we can really use that counterrotating action to our advantage.

I have sooo many good stories to write, but no time to write them right now. All the stuff you just read is almost 4 weeks old.

I knew Malice would eventually stop posting this so he could keep it to himself for his book deal and the subsequent movie rights.

Curses!
