I want to put an 88 camaro 305 in my 96 camaro.... would it fit in the bay without hitting the hood since its carburated? also, my shop teacher said that my transmission might have the bolt pattern to hook up the v8, is that right? and... one last thing, what else would I have to buy?
thanks in advance,
Steven

your v6 trans won't bolt to an old school v8....and I seriously doubt you'd have clearance without some type of tall cowl hood. Besides, everyone knows you upgrade to a 350..not a 305. ;)

ok well im just guessing that you have a V6...if you have the 3.8, their still no reason to go to the 305, you V6 is just as fast if not faster, Grimm's right, if you wanna upgrade to a V8, dont waste your time on a 305, even if it is free, your better off with the 6. but if you want an 8, go for the 350

off subject, but 305's can be fast. I was just throwing that out because it's the basic mentality of anotehr forum I belong to. :P
In all seriousness...the swap can be done...but it's not an easy project. It requires a lot of new stuff to be done..and even then your car wouldn't pass emissions testing(if you have that in your state).

no emission tests in florida:) what all would be hard about the swap?

I wish I could find it...there was a guy on there awhile back that was swapping a carb'd smallblock into his car...and he had a list of all that had to be changed.
IMO it's not the greatest choice in teh world for an engine swap..unless you're just trying to be unique. Getting the distributor back in there would be a total PITA all by itself. Let alone figuring out how to mount the engine..since I don't think it'd mount up on the v6 k-member.

The fact that the distributor will be half way into the cabin would turn me off to it. You can work that 305 and make if fast definatly, since it was free, its just more money to play with.
I'd assume you'd need custom motor mounts, a 700R4, some suspension components, and some electrical work to get yoru guages working correctly, assuming you'd keep 4th gen style gauges in there.
A carbed 305? Are you reatrded? It would prolly make your car slower, stick with the 3.8, or swap in a LT1. Don't waste your time and money on a 305 swap.

his tranny would hold the power fine.
but practically everything in the '96 would have to be junked, expect the radiator, driveshaft, and rear end. it might be a free 305 but you will pay out the nose to have a car that's not street legal, that nobody will inspect, and has a boat anchor for an engine. not to mention your 3.8 is already putting more to the ground than the 305 makes at the crank.
i tried all through high school to get my 305 to make power, but it is tough to overcome the fact that it is poorly designed and conceived from the start.

This would be taking a step backwards.
The only advantage would be that it would sound better :P

dont take everything so personal, no one is calling you a retard or anything, just saying it just wouldnt be worth your time or money to put a 305 in that car and try to make it fast, and rally is right those 305's had like 170- 180 crank hp our cars have that at the wheels stock, plus its easier to make them go faster to

a gen I small block chevy has no place in a 4th gen f-body. especially a 305, I think I gained at least 50hp and 80tq just switching to a 350 with no mods

Do you know who would have this list? because i am throwing a 400 small block with i think ima go with a t56 tranny with a 12 bolt rear-end, if someone could find a list, that would be the best, but on the mean time, ima try and find it, i know i need a new k member and springs and want rear disk, but im gunna put a new system for the fuel injecting kit, you know? what do i need? all help is wanted, thank you.
