View Full Version : Just picked up a 94 Firebird 3.4, what should I drop in?
I recently picked up a 94 Firebird 3.4 for a price I couldn't refuse. It only has 30k miles on it, so it's practically new, but it's still a slug.
I don't want to do the typical LT1/LS1 swap, I'm leaning towards a 3800 with some sort of forced induction. How much more complex is it to go from a 3.4 to 3.8. How much of a nightmare would it be to wire up?
TIA!

just as complicated as the V8 swap... i don't think the drivetrains share anything, even transmission or fuel system.

I dunno man, if you're going to do a full swap I'd do a V8 swap. Then again I'm just learning about the 3800, and I know nothing about the 3.4. Maybe someone else can shed some light on options for your 3.4. I'd try to get as much out as could, if its worth it, since the motor has such low mileage.
Good luck bro.

It would be fun to find an old GN engine/turbo and swap that in. :D
An advantage of swapping a 3800 series 2 in is how cheap you can get the motor for compared to an LT1/LS1.

since the 3.4 is a 60 degree v6 swapping to a 90 degree v6 will require as much work as swapping a v8

Actually I have a 93 camaro. had a 3.4 slug in it. roasted the motor and dropped in a 3.8 Series 2. Heres what you will need to replace.
3.4 tranny will bolt up but you electronic crap wont work, neither will the speedo.
you will need a Y pipe for the 3.8 and a welder.
need the complete wiring harness
I would suggest getting a 1 piece driveshaft
all engine braces and mounts
throttle cables are different. I made a T bracket thing to work.
Also the kick down cable for the tranny (if auto) has to be rigged to work.
Mine never worked...lol
I am sure there is more but thats the major of it. I am just now putting a T5 in my origionally automatic car. lots of fun, not too hard tho, tranny is a PITA to stab, but you can do it for pretty cheap

I was just thinking about this:
How about a 3400 top end swap, and some FI added to that? I've been wondering how that would turn out...

572 Rat motor.Bah, too old school for me. Belongs in a 60's or 70's car, or a boat!

Yeah, since they made 572's back in the day  600+hp on a completely 'stock' (albeit race) motor is extraordinarily badass.

Well, you said you were looking for something different. That would be it. ;)
You can wait for ZZP to release the L36 Aluminum heads and build a wicked top end from there on the 3800 SII.

Besides, I'd rather have setup that'll still get 15+mpg, is somewhat unique, and will not add a few hundred pounds to the front end.

My thoughts exactly! :D

That is true. It is a big block, hence 'rat'.
