It's a long story, but I spend some time wandering around Ft. Leonard Wood Army base today. It was kinda cool because I'd never been on any sort of military base before.
Sorry, I'm just kinda excited I actually have something halfway relevent to post in this section. :dman:
My best friend went there for basic.

I was really impressed when I was there...of course I have nothing to use for comparison, but it seemed like a really nice place.
Fort Benning, GA was a nice place. Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida was cool too.

ft. wood was down the road from my alma mater. That's where the B-2 stealth's are based. It was crazy seeing those things fly in formation when i was walking between classes.

Ft lost in the woods.....lol....if someone joins the army, request not to go there or ft Jackson. Coed Basic training just...I dunno, lets just say the guys from Benning, Sill, or Knox are a little more efficient physically when it comes to AIT.

FT. Leonard wood was featured in the "Marine Times" a few weeks ago. The CO of basic training there is trying a new experimental approach where his DI's are friendly and they coach and mentor the recruits, instead of shouting and beating the recruits.
Needless to say, the Marine Times was looking down at this training approach.
I don't know how I feel about it. On one hand, I don't like it when people yell at me, so I think its a good idea. On the other hand, I don't like it when my subordinates lack discipline and courage, so it's a bad idea.

Sill is doing the same thing, I think its bullshit, its turning it into a pussy army. maybe it wont be bad, but I like knowing that if a person can make it through basic, they might be able to handle combat stress. I dunno, Im very opinionated on this, and very against it.

I agree with you. The whole point of basic training is to ensure that you can handle larger amounts of stress. The few key points you actually learn there are negligable compared to the mental readiness you gain from constantly getting fucked with.

When i was in ROTC even i got drilled hard by MARINE drill instructor's. It didnt bother me. I whent to a leadership taining course and even though it was for a week. It does change you. You see things froma different point of view. They bring you down only to build you up to become a better leader and individual. It was cool i had fun.

I'm personally not convinced basic has anything to do with combat stress... I'm resonably sure that a good .. say 99.9% of personnel IN combat have completed one branches basic .. at a minimum .. however .. not all of those personnel ALSO managed to handle combat stress... and as far as getting constantly fucked with ... wll .. unfortunately the politicians feel the need to put us in positions where we can get fucked with... I always prefered the "bomb it flat and call it a aparking lot" approach .. it minimizes the opportunities for "getting fucked with"..in combat situations .. air support.. learn it, live it,..love it
PS .. Ft lost in the woods ... '93 63B AIT ... '96 12B AIT ...'97 Sapper school ... back when it "didn't exist" .. it was more fun then so they tell me ...
unfortunately IF someone had given me a choice of training sites Lwood wouldn't have been it ... prolly Ft Sam .. so I could comfort all the Meddac chickies ... so they wouldn't later collapse from combat stress*evil grin*

Its not meant to be combat stress, before they went and changed all the rules, it was meant to be as close to combat stress as you could immitate. You get hit, sleep deprived, constantly yelled at and belittled, fatigued, the kind of things youd experience in combat, without actually getting shot at. because if you cant handle basic, there is no way in hell you can handle combat.
