My brother in law is looking at getting a 2001+ Grand Am (probably SE) in the near future. I'm not too familiar with Grand Ams, and I was wondering if you guys could clue me in to common problems or things to watch for.

Intake gaskets (make sure they were recently done).... that's the big one. Get the GT, prices are cheap for an 01 now, so the difference shouldn't be much. Looks better IMO

yea Gt is the way to go. its advantages over the SE include: rear disc brakes (vs. drums), sportier seats, more aggressive tranny, and different body cladding.

other problems to look for are: scratched windows, bad rotors (rotors warp really easy), blower fan not working on anything lower than 3. for the blower fan, its an easy fix, ask if the resistor has been changed. the biggest issue with the 3400 is the lower intake gasket. if thats been changed then it should be in good shape, if not then you need to ask for large discount because that will need to be done immediately. that costs $1000 at the dealer.

Fogged hazed headlights, power window motors, strut mounts, and on 99's the power steering pump
